JAKARTA (Antara) – Since Indonesia’s independence in 1945, the country has been led by eight presidents from various regions in the archipelago. This diversity reflects the broad culture, history, and traditions that exist throughout Indonesia.

The cities of the births of Indonesian leaders not only signify their origins, but also reflect the diversity of nations that are rich in culture, which helped form the character of the president in leading the country.

1. Soekarno – Surabaya, East Java

The First President of the Republic of Indonesia, Ir. Soekarno, born on June 6, 1901 in Surabaya, East Java. His birth house is located on Jalan Peneleh Gang Pandean IV number 40, Peneleh Village, Genteng District. This simple building has now been handed over to the Surabaya City Government and is planned to be a museum to commemorate the services of the proclaimer.

2. Soeharto – Kemusuk, Bantul, Yogyakarta

General Soeharto, the second president of Indonesia, was born on June 8, 1921 in Kemusuk Hamlet, Argomulyo Village, Sedayu District, Bantul Regency, Yogyakarta. This hamlet is now known as a historical tourist destination with several monuments that remember Soeharto’s life journey, including the Setu Legi Monument which was built to commemorate the struggle of local residents during the Dutch Military Aggression II.

3. BJ Habibie – Parepare, South Sulawesi

Indonesia’s third president, Bacharuddin Jusuf Habibie, was born on June 25, 1936 in the city of Parepare, South Sulawesi. The city is known as the “City of Love Habibie-Ainun” as a tribute to the love story of Habibie and his wife, Ainun. The True Love Monument Habibie-Ainun on Andi Makkasau Field is one of the city icons that attract tourists.

4. Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur) – Jombang, East Java

Abdurrahman Wahid, or who is familiarly called Gus Dur, was born on September 7, 1940 in Jombang, East Java. He is the son of KH. Wahid Hasyim and Grandson of KH. Hasyim Asy’ari, Founder of Nahdlatul Ulama. Jombang is known as the City of Santri, and Gus Dur grows in a pesantren environment that is thick with Islamic values ​​and pluralism.

5. Megawati Soekarnoputri – Yogyakarta

The fifth president of Indonesia and the daughter of President Soekarno, Megawati Soekarnoputri, was born on January 23, 1947 in Yogyakarta. Growing up in the palace environment, Megawati became Indonesia’s first female president in 2001, replacing Abdurrahman Wahid. During his term of office, he was known as an effort to strengthen democracy and eradicate corruption.

6. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono – Pacitan, East Java

Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, or SBY, born on September 9, 1949 in Tremas Village, Arjosari District, Pacitan Regency, East Java. He is the only child of the couple R. Soekotjo, a retired Lieutenant Satu, and Sitti Habibah. SBY was the first president who was directly elected by the people through elections in 2004.

7. Joko Widodo – Surakarta (Solo), Central Java

Indonesia’s seventh president, Joko Widodo or Jokowi, was born on June 21, 1961 in Surakarta, Central Java. Known as a simple leadership style and close to the people, Jokowi began his political career as Mayor of Surakarta before serving as Governor of DKI Jakarta and then the President of the Republic of Indonesia.

8. Prabowo Subianto – Jakarta

The eighth President of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, was born on October 17, 1951 in Jakarta. Before serving as president, he had a long military career and had served as Minister of Defense. Prabowo was appointed president in 2024, with Gibran Rakabuming Raka, the son of President Joko Widodo, as his vice president.
