The figure of Dewi Soekarno, wife of President Soekarno who was fined IDR 3 billion


Jakarta (ANTARA) – Dewi Soekarno is known as the 6th wife of Indonesian President Soekarno. Now, he is back in the public spotlight because he was sentenced to a fine of IDR 3 billion by the Japanese Labor Court.

This punishment is a decision based on a case involving demands from employees who have had their employment terminated (PHK) at Dewi’s company since 2021.

Then, in 2022 the company sued the employee again because he was deemed to have incited other employees not to work in the office.

Based on Japanese media reports, Friday Digital, the start of this case occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic season, starting when Dewi traveled to Indonesia to attend the funeral of the husband whose child had died.

With the rapid spread of COVID-19 throughout the world, employees suspect that Dewi’s son-in-law died of COVID-19, so they are worried that Dewi is also infected.

Dewi’s company office is in the same building as her residence. Therefore, the employees decided not to come to the office for two weeks to avoid contact with Dewi.

However, Dewi did not accept this decision and resulted in the termination of the employment contracts of two employees who were deemed to have incited other employees not to come to the office for work.

After receiving their employment termination, the two employees filed a lawsuit with the Japanese Labor Court.

Behind the controversy that occurred, Dewi’s background and life story also became public attention.

A Japanese woman born in Tokyo on February 6 1940, Dewi Soekarno, whose real name is Naoko Nemoto. She was the third daughter of a modest family who worked in migrant construction in Tokyo.

Quoting from the Ministry of Education and Culture’s Encyclopedia page, Dewi attended elementary school at Togai School, Tokyo in 1946. Then, she continued her junior high school education at Koryo School and Mita School, Tokyo in 1952-1955.

When her family’s economic condition was unstable, Dewi worked at the Chiyoda life insurance company as a salesperson. He carried out this job for one year until graduating from high school in 1955.

Dewi really likes art and literature, so she is interested in learning classical Japanese dance, singing, and even acting in dramas. He also joined the art studio at Sishere Hayakawa Art Production.

Her skills and beautiful appearance support Dewi to frequently appear on art stages in Tokyo. Until finally, Dewi decided to work part time at a well-known Tokyo hotel as geisha and cabaret.

When she was 19 years old, Dewi first met President Soekarno at the Imperial Hotel around 1959. On March 3 1962, Dewi officially married President Soekarno and she got a new name, namely Ratna Sari Dewi or Dewi Soekarno.

From their marriage, Dewi and President Soekarno were blessed with a daughter named Kartika Sari Dewi on March 11, 1967.

Kartika Soekarno has worked as a reporter for Tokyo television and a New York advertising agency. Kartika is married to Frits Frederik Seegers, a man from the Netherlands who is President of Citibank Europe.

During her husband’s leadership, Dewi, who had a western and modern appearance, often accompanied President Soekarno to meetings between the president of the Republic of Indonesia and other countries.

In 1964, Dewi was the Honorary Chair of the Indonesia-Japan Friendship Institute and the founder of Nadeshiko, a community of Japanese women married to Indonesians.

After President Soekarno died, Dewi decided to move from Indonesia and lived in several European countries, such as the United States, France and Switzerland. In 2008, Dewi settled back in her birth country, Tokyo, Japan.

Selama Japan, Dewi successfully built a beauty and jewelry business. Apart from that, she is also famous for appearing on Japanese TV and has been a judge in a beauty competition, namely Miss International 2005 in Tokyo.
