The figure of Hasjim Djalal and his work as a senior Indonesian diplomat
Jakarta (ANTARA) – The name Hasjim Djalal is already familiar in the political sphere, especially among Indonesian diplomats and maritime law experts. Now the Indonesian government is mourning the passing of the figure Hasjim Djalal, who was very important in the history of maritime diplomacy.
Hasjim Djalal was declared dead on Sunday (12/1) at Pondok Indah Hospital, Jakarta at 16.40 WIB. This sad news was confirmed by Dino Patti Djalal, who is his son and also a diplomat and former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, via his official X account.
“Prof. Dr. Hasjim Djalal breathed his last breath today at 16.40 (WIB). The deceased was a diplomat who fought for Indonesian insight. “Please pray that his soul will find a place next to Allah SWT and that his services to the Republic of Indonesia will always be remembered well, Amen,” account X @dinopatidjalal on Sunday (12/1).

Hasjim Djalal profile
Senior Diplomat and Indonesian Maritime Law Expert, Hasjim Djalal was born on February 10 1934 in Ampang Gadang, West Sumatra. He gave his dedication to Indonesia in fighting for an archipelagic nation to become the basis for Indonesia’s maritime sovereignty to be recognized internationally.
Hasjim Djalal completed his education up to Senior High School (SMA) in Sumatra and spent his childhood in the village. Growing up from parents who worked as farmers did not discourage him from pursuing higher education.
Hasjim Djalal has quite high ambitions in achieving his goals as a diplomat. In 1956, he continued his education at the Foreign Affairs Academy and began his first career at the Department of Foreign Affairs (Deplu).
In terms of a prominent career, Hasjim Djalal succeeded in getting a scholarship from the government to be able to pursue higher education at the University of Virginia, United States by earning a Master’s and Doctorate degree in international legal studies regarding maritime issues.
The education that Hasjim Djalal has taken is the basis for his guidance in obtaining decent work. Even in 1950 Hasjim Djalal gave an idea related to his observations of Indonesia’s geopolitical conditions as an Archipelago Insight.
With a strong educational background and experience during his tenure at the Department of Foreign Affairs, Hasjim Djalal introduced his thoughts on increasingly complex global challenges while contributing to the development of Indonesian diplomacy in the international realm.
A skyrocketing career and having a well-known name in the diplomatic sphere gave Hasjim Djalal a high spirit of dedication. In 1964 he succeeded in serving as Second Secretary for Political Affairs in Beogard, Yugoslavia.

Then, not long after his position, Hasjim Djalal was placed in Guinea and was recognized as one of the African experts at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. His brilliant career culminated in 1969 when he became Head of the International Legal Service, giving himself the best focus in dealing with maritime law issues.
From 1981 to 1993, Hasjim Djalal successfully served as Indonesian Ambassador to the UN, Canada and Germany. So from this perspective, its strategic position can be seen by other countries, including from an international perspective, by looking at Indonesia through its maritime affairs.
The spirit of dedication to Indonesia in the maritime sector gave Hasjim Djalal many ideas, especially regarding the concept of an archipelagic state in Indonesia and he was also one of the main architects of the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (Unclos).
His thoughts have had a lot of influence, especially the recognition of Indonesia as an archipelagic country recognized internationally.
The passing of the late Hasjim Djalal brought sadness to the people around him, especially to the Indonesian government because he had given full dedication in fighting for maritime affairs in Indonesia.
