A look at the history of the Pasundan State as a separatist movement in West Java
Jakarta (ANTARA) – Did you know that the land of Pasundan or West Java actually wanted its own sovereignty as the Pasundan State.
This happened when the Dutch established the federal state of the Republic of the United States of Indonesia after independence on April 24 1948.
However, this country existed starting in 1946 and was initiated by Moesa Soeria Kartalegawa, before finally having its existence proclaimed on May 4 1947 in the city of Bandung and supported by the Dutch.
At that time, the Pasundan State included West Java, DKI Jakarta and Banten. At that time, the city of Bandung was chosen as the capital of Pasundan State.
The president of this country is Raden Aria Adipati Wiranatakoesoema. He was a person who had nationalist thoughts, this was what ultimately led to him being appointed as Indonesia’s first Minister of Home Affairs by Soekarno.
While still serving as president of the State of Pasundan, Wiranatakoesoema had several prime ministers, namely Adil Puradiredja, Djumhana Wiriaatmadja, and Anwar Tjokroaminoto.

Camp differences
1. Federalist Camp
The federalist camp was represented by Raden Adipati Aria Moesa Soeria Kartalegawa, a former Regent of Garut who was not sympathetic to the national movement. He was supported by Dutch military intelligence (NEVIS) and several political figures who were pro-federalism.
Kartalegawa founded the Pasundan People’s Party (PRP) in Bogor on the initiative of a former KNIL officer, Colonel Santoso, who was also Van Mook’s political advisor. This party was formed with membership carried out through subtle coercion and support from Dutch officials such as Resident M. Klaassen.
On May 4 1947, Kartalegawa proclaimed Negara Pasundan in Bandung despite Van Mook’s opposition. This effort did not receive widespread support due to the bad reputation of Kartalegawa, who was considered corrupt by the Dutch themselves.
The proclamation also met resistance from the people and was considered an act of defection against the Republic of Indonesia.
2. Republican camp
In contrast to the federalist efforts which received less support, the republican camp succeeded in using the formation of the Pasundan State as a strategy to keep the Pasundan Tatars within the Republic of Indonesia.
This camp is led by Raden Aria Wiranatakoesoema, a Sundanese nationalist figure who has a strong track record in the government of the Republic of Indonesia.

Wiranatakoesoema was elected as President of the State of Pasundan through a conference process involving various elements of society, including government officials, religious leaders and the private sector.
The election of Wiranatakoesoema was a victory for the republicans supported by Soekarno. This victory shows that the republican political strategy was successful in maintaining Tatar Pasundan as part of Indonesia.
Pasundan State Government
Pasundan State runs a government with successive cabinets. The following is a list of cabinets that have ruled:
- Adil Cabinet (8 May 1948 – 10 January 1949) with Adil Puradiredja as Prime Minister.
- Djumhana I Cabinet (10 January 1949 – 11 January 1950) with Djumhana Wiriaatmadja as Prime Minister.
- Anwar Cabinet (11 January 1950 – 23 January 1950) with Anwar Tjokroaminoto as Prime Minister.
End of Pasundan State
The Pasundan country experienced increasingly strong political pressure from the Netherlands. When the APRA incident occurred on January 30 1950, President Wiranatakusumah finally handed over the mandate to the Pasundan Parliament.
On March 8 1950, the Pasundan State officially dissolved and became part of the Republic of Indonesia again.
