Who is Hasto Kristiyanto? New suspect in the Harun Masiku case


Jakarta (ANTARA) – Secretary General of the PDI Perjuangan (PDIP), Hasto Kristiyanto, has been named a suspect by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), in connection with the bribery case that ensnared Harun Masiku.

The determination of Hasto Kristiyanto’s name as a suspect is contained in the investigation order or sprindik number Sprin.Dik/153/DIK.00/01/12/2024 dated 23 December 2024.

Because the handover of the position of KPK leadership was carried out on December 20 2024, this means that the investigation order was signed by the new KPK leadership.

For information, Harun Masiku was named by the Corruption Eradication Commission as a suspect in a case of allegedly giving gifts or promises to state officials related to the determination of candidates for elected DPR RI members for the 2019-2024 period at the General Election Commission (KPU) of the Republic of Indonesia.

However, Harun Masiku was always absent from summons from KPK investigators until he was put on the wanted list (DPO) since January 17 2020.

So, who really is Hasto Kristiyanto? This figure is the new suspect in the bribery and corruption case involving Harun Masiku.

Hasto Kristiyanto was born in Yogyakarta on July 7 1966. He is the son of Antonius Krido Pardjono and Yohana Sutami. As a child, Hasto was known to have a great interest in Javanese culture, especially wayang stories.

One of his favorite stories is the Mahabharata, which shaped his views on the struggle between truth and falsehood.

Hasto took his basic education at SD Gentan Yogyakarta (1972–1979), continued to Gentan State Middle School Yogyakarta (1979–1982), and completed his senior secondary education at Kolese De Britto High School Yogyakarta (1982–1985). His teenage years were marked by a deep interest in politics and culture, as well as activities in various organizations.

In 1985, he was accepted at the Faculty of Chemical Engineering, Gadjah Mada University (UGM). During his studies, Hasto showed leadership talent and was active in student organizations, until he was trusted to be Chair of the UGM Faculty of Engineering Student Senate.

During that time, he began to be inspired by Bung Karno’s thoughts, which would later become the basis of his political ideology.

Hasto continued his Master’s degree at STIE Prasetya Mulya Business School (1997–2000) and earned a PhD in Defense Science from Defense University, Bogor (2020–2022).

His dissertation was entitled “Soekarno’s Geopolitical Thought Discourse and Its Relevance to National Defense” also made an important contribution to the study of Sukarno’s geopolitics.

Professional career

After graduating from UGM in 1991, Hasto started his career at PT Rekayasa Industri, a BUMN which operates in the engineering and construction sector.

He is involved in various strategic projects, including the development of ammonia and palm oil factories, as well as studies on the development of Nuclear Power Plants.

His career in Industrial Engineering lasted until 2002, with his last position as Head of the Agro-Industry Division.

Political career

Hasto’s interest in politics has grown since the early 1990s. He learned a lot from UGM academic, Cornelis Lay, and socialized with PDI seniors in East Java.

His political career began as a “typist” in party meetings. In 2004, he was elected as a member of the DPR RI representing the East Java electoral district, and sat on Commission VI which partners with various strategic ministries.

As a member of the DPR, Hasto was active in the formation of a number of important laws, including the Investment Law (2007) and the Information and Electronic Transactions Law (2008).

He is also known as one of the proponents of the right to inquiry on major issues, such as the rejection of rice imports and the increase in fuel prices.

Secretary General of the PDI-P

Hasto began serving as Secretary General of PDI Perjuangan in 2014, replacing Tjahjo Kumolo who was appointed Minister of Home Affairs. His leadership was officially confirmed at the IV PDI-P Congress in 2015.

Hasto is known for successfully restructuring party management with modernization principles that still prioritize the popular spirit.

His success in bringing PDI Perjuangan to become the winner of the 2019 elections, as well as dominating various regional elections, resulted in him being reappointed as Secretary General for the 2019–2024 period. This makes him the only Secretary General of the PDI Perjuangan to serve two consecutive terms.

Role in political campaigns

Hasto also plays an important role in national political campaigns. He was the key figure behind the victory of Joko Widodo and Basuki Tjahaja Purnama in the 2012 DKI Jakarta Regional Election.

In the 2014 and 2019 presidential elections, Hasto was tasked with leading political coordination for Jokowi’s victory, both as spokesperson for the Success Team and Secretary of the National Campaign Team.

Sukarnoist Thought

For Hasto, Sukarnoist ideology is not just political thought, but is the spiritual basis of struggle. He expressed this view in various strategic party policies, including when he wrote a dissertation highlighting the relevance of Sukarno’s geopolitics to national defense.

Personal life

Hasto is married to Maria Ekowati and has two children, Ignatius Windu Hastomo and Agatha Puspita Asri.
