The figure of the former Governor of East Kalimantan, Awang Faroek Ishak, who is now dead


Jakarta (ANTARA) – The former Governor of East Kalimantan, Awang Faroek Ishak, has reportedly died. This sad news was officially conveyed by the East Kalimantan Provincial Government (Pemprov) via a post on their Instagram account.

“The East Kalimantan Provincial Government expresses its condolences for the death of Prof. Dr. Awang Faroek Ishak (Governor of East Kalimantan for the period 2008-2013 and 2013-2018)” reported from Instagram @pemprov_kaltim.

Awang Faroek was treated in the ICU at Kanujoso Hospital, Djatiwibowo RSKD) Balikpapan, before being declared dead on Sunday (22/12/2024) at 21.00 WITA. The deceased had been diagnosed with Bell’s palsy (nervous disorder) in 2014 and this caused some facial muscles to experience paralysis.

According to information circulating regarding the death of Awang Faroek, the Corruption Eradication Committee (KPK) will immediately issue an Investigation Stop Order (SP3) regarding the alleged corruption case in Mining Business Licensing (IUP) in East Kalimantan. In his statement, the Corruption Eradication Commission’s Director of Investigation, Asep Guntur Rahayu, is verifying the truth of the news of the death of the former Governor of East Kalimantan in order to issue SP3.

Profile of Awang Faroek Ishak

Awang Faroek Ishak was born on July 31 1948, the 11th of 13 children. His father, Awang Ishak, and mother, Dayang Johariah, were known as civil service figures in East Kalimantan (Kaltim). His family has great influence in the world of government in the area.

Awang Faroek’s educational history began in Tarakan with elementary education and then continued from junior high school to high school in Tenggarong. Then, in 1973, he successfully graduated and obtained a bachelor’s degree at IKIP Malang, Faculty of Social Sciences Teaching.

In 1997, Awang took a Masters in Management at the University of Indonesia and in 1998 he took a Masters again majoring in National Resilience. When he was 57 years old, Awang Faroek registered to study at doctoral level at Airlangga University.

The beginning of his career began as staff at the East Kalimantan Governor’s Office in 1973, not long after, in 1978 he served as Assistant Chancellor III at Mulawarman University and then in 1982 held the position of Dean of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education.

After that, Awang Faroek served as Head of the East Kalimantan Bapedalda. From all his dedication while carrying out his duties in the field of education, Awang Faroek succeeded in becoming a visiting professor at Victoria University, Melbourne, Australia.

On the official Unair Alumnipedia website, Awang Faroek revealed that his philosophy is sincerity and honesty in work. So it is not surprising that he always encourages higher education as an effort to build character.

Awang Faroek’s initial foray into the world of politics was as a member of the DPR/MPR RI for two terms from 1987-1997, after which he ran for office and was elected as Regent of East Kutai from 2000-2008, serving for two terms.

From a brilliant career history in 2008, Awang Faroek succeeded in serving as Governor of East Kalimantan until 2018 and in 2019 he continued to enter parliament to become a member of the DPR-RI representing East Kalimantan.

Awang Faroek is known for his leadership which focuses on infrastructure development and improving the quality of education. With efforts to build character and strengthen government governance.

Awang Faroek’s passing brings deep sadness to the East Kalimantan region. However, his dedication and service will always be remembered due to his great attention to society in the field of education. Because he is one of the figures in the plan for free education through the 12 year compulsory education program.
