Profile of Agung Laksono and his political career


Jakarta (ANTARA) – Agung Laksono, a senior politician who has great influence in the world of Indonesian politics, especially in the Golkar Party. Agung Laksono has been involved in politics for a long time, holding various important positions in government, and is active in his party.

He is currently involved in a dispute with Jusuf Kalla, Vice President of Indonesia in the 10th and 12th terms. This conflict began with the struggle for the position of General Chair of the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI), which involved both of them.

This competition for strategic positions in PMI has given rise to unexpected political dynamics. This has attracted the attention of various groups and debated the decision-making process within the humanitarian organization.

Profile of Agung Laksono

The man born in Semarang 23 March 1949 with the name Agung Laksono has a good career and educational history. His name is already familiar in the world of politics, especially in the Golongan Karya faction.

Agung Laksono completed his education at SMA Negeri 4 Medan before continuing to the Faculty of Medicine at the Indonesian Christian University (UKI). His interest in the world of organizations began to grow during college, which later became the basis for his career in politics and organizations.

Apart from formal education, Agung also participated in international training such as the Eisenhower Program in the United States. This experience broadened his horizons globally, which contributed to his success in various sectors.

Agung Laksono became active in politics during the New Order era by joining the Golkar Party. Then he was elected as a member of the DPR from 1987-2009.

In 2004, Agung Laksono was appointed Coordinating Minister for People’s Welfare (Menko Kesra) in President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s cabinet.

In this position, he has responsibility for coordinating various social welfare programs, including in the health, education and disaster management sectors.

Agung’s leadership at the Coordinating Minister for People’s Welfare was marked by a number of initiatives to improve the quality of life of the Indonesian people.

Then in 2009, Agung was elected as Chairman of the People’s Representative Council (DPR), a position that gave him greater influence in the formation of national policy.

As Speaker of the DPR, he is known as a firm leader and is committed to strengthening the role of the legislature in the Indonesian government system.

From then on he was quite active in government institutions, filling other public positions ranging from parliament to government.

Agung is also actively involved in various organizations, such as AMPI and HIPMI, where he once served as general chairman. He led Kosgoro 1957, one of the main pillars of the Golkar Party, which reflects his dedication to cadre development.

Previously, in 2019-2024, Agung was a member of the Presidential Advisory Council (Wantimpres) during the Joko Widodo administration.

In the second term of the presidency, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) Agung was elected Minister of Youth and Sports (Menpora) in 2012-2013.

Until the end of SBY’s administration, Agung was trusted to be Acting Minister of Religion (Menag) in 2014. He also replaced Suryadharma Ali, who was involved in a corruption case in organizing the Hajj.

However, from several good careers, Agung Laksono is also known as a figure who is often involved in a number of political dynamics, one of which is recently a dispute with Jusuf Kalla in the polemic regarding the appointment of PMI General Chair.

He is in the spotlight because Jusuf Kalla reported him to the police regarding the polemic. The steps taken by Agung were considered illegal and unconstitutional by a number of PMI figures.
