Soekarno’s sons and daughters often attract public attention, both through their personal life journeys and their contributions to the nation. Each of them carries a unique story and trace, along with their father’s big role in Indonesian history.
As one of the most well-known families in Indonesia, Soekarno’s children not only grew up in the spotlight, but were also often involved in the worlds of politics, art and education.

1. Mohammad Guntur Soekarnoputra
Mohammad Guntur Soekarnoputra, who was born on November 3 1944, was the first son of Soekarno and Fatmawati. He is the older brother of Megawati Soekarnoputri, Rachmawati Soekarnoputri, Sukmawati Soekarnoputri, and Guruh Soekarnoputra.
Guntur is married to Henny Emilia Handayani and has a daughter named Puti. Unlike his younger siblings, Guntur is not interested in entering the world of politics.
2. Diah Permata Megawati Setiawati Soekarnoputri
Diah Permata Megawati Setiawati Soekarnoputri, who was born on 23 January 1947, was the fifth President of Indonesia who served from 23 July 2001 to 20 October 2004. She also served as the eighth Vice President of Indonesia from 21 October 1999 to 23 July 2001. Megawati became the female president The first in Indonesia and the only one to date.
Previously, Megawati served as Vice President in the government of President Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur) until Gus Dur was dismissed in 2001. After that, she became President of Indonesia. Megawati tried to run again in the 2004 and 2009 presidential elections, but lost both times to Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
3. Diah Pramana Rachmawati Soekarnoputri
Diah Pramana Rachmawati Soekarnoputri (27 September 1950 – 3 July 2021) was an Indonesian lawyer and politician who founded the Bung Karno Education Foundation and the Pioneer Party in 2002. She was the third child of President Soekarno from his marriage to Fatmawati, and was active in politics, including joined the Gerindra Party at the end of his career.
After the Soeharto era, Rachmawati founded the National Forum in 2001, which later became the basis for the formation of the Indonesian National Unity Party. In the 2004 elections, he was nominated by the party even though he was not its founder. In 2015, he joined the Gerindra Party and was appointed Deputy Chair of the Board of Trustees in 2020.
4. Diah Mutiara Sukmawati Sukarnoputri
Diah Mutiara Sukmawati Sukarnoputri (born 26 October 1951) is an Indonesian artist and politician, as well as the daughter of President Soekarno and the sister of Megawati Soekarnoputri, former president of Indonesia. He was active in the world of art and politics, including founding the Indonesian National Party (PNI) Soepeni in 1998, which later changed its name to PNI Marhaenisme in 2002.
Sukmawati started her education at the People’s School (SR) and continued her studies at the Jakarta LPKJ Dance Academy (1970-1974) and the Department of International Relations at Bung Karno University since 2003. In 2002, she was appointed as General Chair of PNI Marhaenisme.
5. Mohammad Guruh Irianto Soekarnoputra
Mohammad Guruh Irianto Soekarnoputra (born 13 January 1953), himself is an Indonesian artist and politician who has served as a member of the DPR since 1999. He is the youngest child of President Soekarno from his marriage to Fatmawati and the brother of Megawati Soekarnoputri, the fifth president of Indonesia.
Guruh Soekarnoputra began his artistic career as a dancer and musician. He founded GSP Production and previously Swara Mahardhika, as well as the music groups Guruh Gipsy and Gank Pegangsaan with a number of well-known musicians. Apart from his career in the world of art, he is active in politics as a member of the DPR from PDIP and is married to Guseynova Sabina Padmavati from Uzbekistan.
6. Karina Kartika Sari Dewi Soekarno
Karina Kartika Sari Dewi Soekarno (born 11 March 1967) is the daughter of Indonesia’s first President, Soekarno, and his wife Ratna Sari Dewi Soekarno. Kartika grew up in Paris, then worked as a television journalist in Tokyo before pursuing a career at an advertising agency in New York.
After working for some time at a foundation in the United States, Kartika founded the Kartika Soekarno Foundation (KSF) to develop children’s education in Indonesia. On 2 December 2005, she married Frits Frederik Seegers, President of Citibank Europe from the Netherlands.
7. Totok Suryawan Sukarno Putra
Totok Suryawan Sukarno Putra, better known as Totok Suryawan Soekarnoputra (born 17 July 1967), is an Indonesian politician from the Perindo Party. He is the only son of President Soekarno and Kartini Manoppo, and received the name Totok from his father. Totok was born in Nurnberg, West Germany, although in official documents from the General Election Commission his date of birth is recorded as July 17, 1967.
The name Totok Suryawan means “Son of the Dawn”. Due to Indonesian political tensions at that time, Soekarno was unable to meet Totok and his mother until they returned to Indonesia on June 21 1978. Before entering politics, Totok worked at Medco, an oil company, for two years.
8. Rukmini Sukarno Kline
Rukmini Sukarno Kline (26 August 1943 – 1 May 2009) was the daughter of the President of Indonesia, Soekarno. As an opera singer, she lived in Rome in the 1960s, where she met and married American film actor Franklin Latimore Kline. They have a son, Chris Kline, who became a journalist.
Her husband, Franklin, once held a concert for Rukmini at Carnegie Hall and called it a Fiesta Mundo (world party). Rukmini, who is known to speak eight languages fluently, sings songs from various countries around the world.
9. Bayu Soekarnoputra
Bayu Soekarnoputra is one of President Soekarno’s children, born from his marriage to Hartini. Soekarno and Hartini married in 1952, and Bayu was born six years later, namely in 1958.
As Soekarno’s son, Bayu Soekarnoputra was not exposed much to the public media. Therefore, information about his life is relatively minimal and is rarely highlighted by the media.
10. Mohammad Taufan Soekarnoputra
Mohammad Taufan Soekarnoputra (born 27 March 1955 – died 17 January 1986) was the eldest son of President Soekarno from his marriage to Hartini, who had a younger brother named Bayu Soekarnoputra. Taufan was born at the Amarta Pavilion, Bogor Palace.
Taufan Soekarnoputra met Iryani Levana Danubrata while studying in 1973. Levana, who came from a mixed Sundanese, Russian and Japanese family, was the only daughter and was still studying at junior high school. They began a serious relationship in 1977 and married on Sunday, October 18 1981, at Sidik Danubrata’s residence, Bandung.
11. Ayu Gembirowati
Ayu Gembirowati is the last child of President Soekarno, born from his marriage to Haryati, Soekarno’s sixth wife. Haryati herself married Sukarno during the final days of Soekarno’s leadership, but little is known about her personal life, including her role and activities in public life.
Even though she was part of the extended Soekarno family, Ayu Gembirowati, like her half-sisters from Sukarno’s marriage to Hartini, was not widely exposed by the media. This causes information about him to be very limited, and he rarely appears in public. Thus, Ayu Gembirowati’s personal life remains something that is little known to the wider public.
