Profile of Saan Mustopa, Deputy Speaker of the DPR for the 2024-2029 period
Jakarta (ANTARA) – Saan Mustopa has entered the leadership ranks of the Indonesian People’s Representative Council (DPR) as deputy chairman for the 2024-2029 period. Saan is tasked with coordinating the scope of the Industrial and Development Sector (KORINBANG).
Saan Mustopa was elected as a representative from the NasDem Party Fraction to be one of the 5 leaders of the DPR RI for the 2024-2029 period, namely with Sufmi Dasco Ahmad (Gerindra Party Faction), Adies Kadir (Golkar Party Faction), Cucun Ahmad Syamsurizal PKB (PKB) Faction as representatives chairman and Puan Maharani (PDI Perjuangan Faction) as chairman of the DPR RI.
The DPR RI leaders were nominated by the political party holding the most seats.
Previously, Saan Mustopa was assigned to Commission II and served as deputy chairman of the same commission in the 2019-2024 period.
Born in Karawang, West Java, July 5 1968, Saan Mustopa or often called Kang Saan by his colleagues is a politician. He is a cadre of the NasDem Party and currently also serves as Deputy General Chair of the NasDem Party DPP for the 2024-2029 period.
Saan Mustopa started his political career by joining the Democratic Party. He is believed to be the Chair of the Cadreization Department of the Democratic Central Leadership Council and is known as one of the close friends of Anas Urbaningrum, former chairman of the Democratic Party.
In the 2009 elections, Saan Mustopa ran as a Democratic Party candidate for the West Java VII elective area (dapil) whose regions were Karawang, Bekasi and Purwakarta and succeeded in becoming a member of the DPR-RI for the 2009–2014 period. At that time, he was assigned by his party to Commission III which handled legal, human rights and security issues.
In the 2014 elections, Saan Mustapa was re-elected as a member of the DPR RI for the 2014-2019 period. However, on December 15 2015 Saan Mustapa stopped as a member of the DPR because his party carried out Interim Replacement (PAW).
In the 2015 regional elections, Saan Mustopa volunteered to be a candidate for Regent of Karawang paired with Iman Sumantri. This nomination was without the support of the Democratic Party, Saan actually received support from three political parties, namely the Golkar Party, the Gerindra Party and the National Democratic Party (NasDem). However, he has not managed to escape.
After failing in the 2015 Karawang Regional Election, Saan changed direction to join the NasDem Party. Saan was appointed Chair of the Regional Leadership Council (DPW) of the West Java Province NasDem Party for the 2016-2021 period.
His political career in the NasDem Party continues to grow. In the 2019 elections, Saan Mustopa again ran as a candidate for member of the DPR RI from the Nasdem Party for Dapil VII West Java and was successfully elected as a member of the DPR RI. At that time, he was assigned to Commission II and served as deputy chairman of the commission.
In the 2024 election, Saan was re-elected in the same electoral district and assigned by his party to serve as deputy chairman of the DPR RI for the 2024-2029 period.
Saan Mustopa has an educational background majoring in Physics, at IKIP Bandung he held a bachelor’s degree in 1993. Then, Saan continued his undergraduate education in Political Science at the University of Indonesia, graduating in 2004 and postgraduate education in the field of political science, graduating in 2008 at the same university and a doctoral degree in International Relations. Political Science major at Padjadjaran University graduating in 2020.
