Jakarta (ANTARA) – Helmi Hasan is an Indonesian politician and candidate for governor of Bengkulu in the 2024 regional elections.
He was born on November 29 1979 in Pisang, Penengahan, South Lampung, Lampung. Helmi is known as a cadre of the National Mandate Party (PAN) and has served as Mayor of Bengkulu for two periods, namely 2013–2018 and 2018–2023.
Helmi Hasan is the younger brother of Zulkifli Hasan, a national politician who also serves as General Chair of PAN.
Life history and education
Helmi Hasan is the youngest of six children in his family. He spent his high school years in East Jakarta, specifically at SMAN 100 Jatinegara before continuing his higher education at Bengkulu University, majoring in economics.
During his college years, he was active in the Islamic Students Association (HMI) organization, which was the beginning of his political career. After that, he joined the National Mandate Party (PAN).
Political career
Helmi Hasan’s political career began when he was elected as a member of the Bengkulu City DPRD in 2004. His expertise in organizing made him appointed as Secretary of the Regional Leadership Council (DPW) of PAN of Bengkulu Province in 2005, then became Chair of DPW PAN in 2010.
In the 2009 Legislative Election, he succeeded in becoming a member of the Bengkulu Province DPRD, where he served as Deputy Chair.
In 2012, Helmi ran for election as mayor of Bengkulu. With the support of a number of major parties such as PAN, Golkar, Gerindra, PNBK and Democrat, he managed to win the election by winning 51.46% of the vote, defeating incumbent Ahmad Kanedi. Helmi was appointed as Mayor of Bengkulu on January 21 2013.
During his leadership, Helmi Hasan faced corruption charges. However, his suspect status was canceled through a court decision in 2015.
He ran for re-election in the 2018 Bengkulu Regional Election and succeeded in winning the election for a second term. He held this position until September 24 2023, although he was temporarily replaced by Budiman Ismaun as acting mayor between January and September 2018.
In 2020, Helmi Hasan ran for Governor of Bengkulu in the Regional Head Election. However, he lost to incumbent Rohidin Mersyah.
Personal life
Helmi Hasan is married to Khairunnisa, and the couple is blessed with four children. He comes from a family with a strong political background.
Apart from Zulkifli Hasan, another older brother, Zainudin Hasan, has also held political positions in Lampung. Several of his nieces, such as Princess Zulkifli Hasan and Zita Anjani, are also active in politics.
