The figure of Mari Elka Pangestu, former minister of SBY, became President Prabowo’s Special Envoy
Jakarta (ANTARA) – Mari Elka Pangestu officially served as the President’s Special Envoy for International Trade and Multilateral Cooperation, after being appointed by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta, Tuesday (22/10).
As Special Presidential Envoy, Mari Elka Pangestu carries out special tasks in the field of trade given directly by the president outside of the tasks already covered in the organizational structure of ministries and other government agencies.
The name Mari Elka Pangestu in the Indonesian government is no longer foreign, this woman, born 23 October 1956, once held several ministerial positions during the administration of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY).
He served as Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy in 2011-2014 and as Minister of Trade in Indonesia in 2004-2011.
Prof. Dr. Mari Elka Pangestu, B.Ec., M.Ec, has a background and experience as an economist, monetary expert and lecturer. He is a Bachelor and Master of Economics graduate from the Australian National University.
Then he earned a Doctorate or Ph.D from the University of California, Davis with a specialization in macroeconomics and international trade.
In 2020-March 2023, Mari Elka served as Managing Director of Development Policy and Partnerships at the World Bank, because of her expertise and dedication in encouraging economic development and international cooperation.
Mari Elka is involved in organizations including as Chair of the Supervisory Board at the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), Washington DC.
He is also active as an advisor to the Global Commission on global issues and Geopolitical transformation at the Energy Transformation of International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Abu Dhabi.
Mari Elka is also an academic and currently a Professor of International Economics, Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Indonesia and also serves as Chair of the Prasetiya Mulya University Senate.
Apart from that, Mari Elka is also a Senior Fellow at the Columbia School of International and Public Affairs, Adjunct Professor at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy and the Crawford School of Public Policy, Australian National University, as reported on the University of Indonesia website. He is also a member of the Board of Directors at the Center for Strategic & International Studies, Jakarta (CSIS).
