Profile of Bambang Brodjonegoro, presidential advisor with extensive experience as a minister


Jakarta (ANTARA) – President Prabowo Subianto appointed Bambang Permadi Soemantri Brodjonegoro as Special Advisor to the President for Economic Affairs. Bambang’s inauguration was held at the State Palace, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday (22/10).

The inauguration of the Special Advisor to the President is based on the Decree of the President of the Republic of Indonesia Number 140/P of 2024 concerning the Appointment of the Special Advisor to the President.

Bambang Permadi Soemantri Brodjonegoro is a familiar figure in the world of Indonesian government.

He once served as Minister of Research and Technology as well as Head of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) in the government of President Joko Widodo and Vice President Ma’ruf Amin in the Advanced Indonesia Cabinet.

Bambang was appointed on 23 October 2019 and served until 28 April 2021, when the ministry was merged with the Ministry of Education and Culture.

Previously, in the Working Cabinet, Bambang served as Minister of National Development Planning/Bappenas from 27 July 2016 to 20 October 2019.

Previously, he served as Minister of Finance from 27 October 2014 to 27 July 2016. His career in government began when he was Deputy Minister of Finance in the Second United Indonesia Cabinet under the leadership of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

In terms of education, Bambang earned a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Indonesia (UI) in 1990 with a focus on Development Economics and Regional Economics.

He then continued his education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, United States, where he completed a master’s degree (1991-1993) and a doctoral program (1993-1997).

As an academic, Bambang started his career at the UI Faculty of Economics as a teaching staff until he was finally appointed as a professor at UI in 2006, making him one of the youngest professors.

Outside the academic realm, Bambang Brodjonegoro is also widely known in various sectors, from the capital market to the government sphere.

He is active in various social organizations and has established close relationships with a number of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN), such as PT PLN, PT ANTAM, PT TELKOM, and others.

With special expertise in the field of Development Economics, especially related to urban areas, many companies and government institutions have entrusted him to hold positions as a member of the board of commissioners or as an independent consultant.
