Profile of Mugiyanto, 1998 activist candidate for deputy minister in the new cabinet
Jakarta (ANTARA) – Mugiyanto Sipin, an expert staff member at the Presidential Staff Office (KSP), is currently in the spotlight after being invited by Prabowo Subianto to fill a position in the Prabowo-Gibran Cabinet. The reason is that President-elect Prabowo Gibran has summoned deputy ministerial candidates to fill the cabinet for the 2024-2029 period.
On Tuesday (15/10), Prabowo invited the candidate for head of the agency and the candidate for deputy minister to his residence on Jalan Kertanegara IV, South Jakarta. During the meeting, a total of 58 names of figures were called.
Interestingly, in the list of candidates for deputy minister in the Prabowo-Gibran cabinet, there is a human rights activist and 1998 activist, namely Mugiyanto Sipin. It is rumored that he will become deputy minister accompanying Natalius Pigai in dealing with human rights.
Profile and track record of Mugiyanto Sipin
Mugiyanto is a graduate of Gadjah Mada University (UGM) who currently serves as Main Expert at the Presidential Staff Office (KSP) in the fields of Politics, Law, Security and Human Rights. He has decades of experience in the field of human rights and democracy.
This 1998 reform activist from SMID was kidnapped and tortured. Currently, he is actively fighting for human rights as Senior Program Officer for Human Rights and Democracy at INFID. Apart from that, he was also appointed as an Associate Expert at Deputy V, Presidential Staff Office.
From 2015 to 2020, he served as Program Director at the International NGO Forum on Indonesian Development (INFID), a non-governmental organization that focuses on advocating for national and international policies related to development and democratization in Indonesia.
Prior to that, Mugiyanto was also active in the Indonesian Family Association of Missing Persons (IKOHI), where he served as Chair of IKOHI during the 2000-2014 period. IKOHI is a non-governmental organization that focuses on assistance for victims of human rights violations.
Apart from being active domestically, Mugiyanto was also involved in the Asian Federation Against Enforced Disappearances (AFAD) which was based in Manila, Philippines, during the 2006-2014 period. AFAD is a federation of human rights organizations that focuses on the issue of enforced disappearances in Asia.
Mugiyanto has extensive experience in campaigning, lobbying and advocating for transitional justice in Indonesia, Asia and at the UN Human Rights Body level.
He has also served as a member of the Steering Committee of the International Coalition Against Enforced Disappearances (ICAED) and Chair of the Indonesian Civil Society Coalition for the Coalition for an International Criminal Court (CICC) in 2007-2009.
