Profile of Deputy Minister of Communication and Information, Nezar Patria, who entered Prabowo’s cabinet
Jakarta (ANTARA) – Nezar Patria is a familiar figure among activists, journalists and the current Indonesian government.
With a long track record as a journalist and his active involvement in the reform movement, Nezar now serves as Deputy Minister of Communication and Information (Wamen Kominfo) in President Jokowi’s cabinet.
His name came up again when Prabowo’s agenda was to meet the deputy ministerial candidates at his home, Jalan Kertanegara, Jakarta on Tuesday (15/10), the figure of Nezar Patria was seen also attending the meeting.
Ahead of the inauguration of the President of the Republic of Indonesia in 2024, Nezar said that he was directed by Prabowo to discuss the field of technology and managing various obstacles in the future.

Nezar is considered to have relevant skills and experience, so his name is being considered for inclusion in Prabowo’s cabinet.
So, who is Nezar Patria? Let’s look at the profile and background of the deputy minister candidate who will occupy a strategic position in Prabowo’s government.
Nezar Patria’s profile
Nezar Patria, a man born October 5 1970, is a native of Aceh. His father, Sjamsul Kahar, was the general leader of the largest media in Aceh, namely Harian Serambi Indonesia, part of the Kompas Gramedia media group.
Nezar studied undergraduate at Gadjah Mada University (UGM), Yogyakarta, at the Faculty of Philosophy. This is where his activist work began, because he joined student organizations such as the UGM Faculty of Philosophy Student Press Bureau, UGM Salahuddin Congregation, and the UGM Philosophy Plaza study group.
Being part of this organization, Nezar also became one of the kidnapping victims of Activist 98 along with three of his friends. His story was shared in an article entitled “In the Temple of Torture in the New Order” in Tempo magazine and in a novel entitled “Sea Telling Stories” written by his colleague, Leila Chudori.
After completing his Bachelor’s degree at UGM, Nezar continued his studies abroad. Nezar studied at Master’s level majoring in History of International Relations at London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).
Not stopping there, Nezar is still continuing his education until he gets a Doctorate degree. Some of the educational degrees he has achieved are an MBA at the ITB School of Business and Management in 2022, an Asean MBA at the Graduate School of Business University Sains Malaysia in 2022 and a doctorate in communications at FISIPOL, Gadjah Mada University.
Nezar started his career in the world of journalism. He worked as a journalist for the Weekly News Magazine at Tempo from 1999-2008.
After completing his journalist duties at Tempo, Nezar founded the be portalRita Viva.co.id in 2008-2014 with his colleagues and was also selected as managing editor.
His long journey in the world of journalism has led him to serve as General Chair of the Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI) in the 2008-2011 period and Member of the Press Council, Chair of the Inter-Agency Relations Commission in 2016-2019.
In 2003, Nezar won the award Journalism for Tolerance Prize in the investigative coverage of the May 1998 riots published in Tempo Magazine. The event was organized by International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) in Manila, Philippines.
Then, Nezar also delved into the field of research as editor of the social and economic thought journal Prisma (LP3ES).
In the government sector, Nezar has served as Special Staff V to the Minister of BUMN from 2022 to 2023. He is trusted to occupy this position considering his experience having served as Institutional Director of PT Pos Indonesia (Persero) in 2020-2022 and President Commissioner of PT Dapensi Trio Usaha in 2021-2022.
Then, on July 17 2023, Nezar was inaugurated by President Jokowi into his cabinet and currently serves as Deputy Minister of Communication and Information accompanying the Minister of Communication and Information, Budi Arie Setiadi.
