The figure of Muhammad Syafi’i, a Gerindra politician who is a candidate for deputy minister in the new cabinet

Muhammad Syafi’i, a politician from the Gerindra Party, became the public spotlight after his name was included as one of the candidates for deputy minister in the cabinet of Prabowo Subianto, President Elect for the 2024 Election.
With an academic background, long experience in politics and a track record in the legislature, Muhammad Syafi’i is considered to have the relevant abilities to enter the cabinet.

Profile of Muhammad Syafi’i
Muhammad Syafi’i was born in Medan, North Sumatra on October 21 1959. Familiarly called Romo, he is the third child of H. Raden Sanusi and Hj. Latifah Hanum.
His formal education started from SD Negeri 88 Medan in 1967-1973, then he continued to SMP Negeri 12 Medan, until graduating from SMA Joshua in 1976-1979.
After completing his formal education, Romo continued his studies at the Faculty of Law and succeeded in obtaining a law degree from the University of North Sumatra (USU) in 1979-1988.
With a different major from Law, Romo took a Doctoral program majoring in Qur’an Tafsir at the Al-Qur’an Science College in 2018 until now.
In 1982, Romo began to enter the world of education as a teacher at the Ade Irma College. Then, he continued as a teacher at Polonia Student Park, until he became a lecturer in Islamic religion at Sisingamangaraja XII University.
In the course of his political career, Romo joined the Gerindra party. On various occasions, Romo was successfully elected as a member of the Medan DPRD in 1997-1999 and the North Sumatra DPRD in 2004-2009.
His experience allowed Romo to sit on a bench in the Senayan building. Romo was elected as a member of the DPR RI in Commission III and a member of the DPR RI Baleg in the 2014-2019 and 2019-2024 periods. Currently he has been elected as a member of the MPR RI Study Body for the Gerindra Fraction.
In 2016, Romo was entrusted with being the leader of the Special Committee for the Revision of Law no. 15/2003 concerning Criminal Acts of Terrorism in the Terrorism Law. The revised law was successfully passed in mid-May 2018.
Within the Gerindra party body, Romo actively serves as Deputy Chair of the Gerindra DPP Advisory Council as well as Deputy Chair of the Gerindra Party Honorary Council in the 2020-2025 period.
In Prabowo’s upcoming cabinet, he is a candidate for deputy minister elected by the President of the Republic of Indonesia in 2024. Although he has not yet revealed the position he will occupy, Romo is ready to carry out ministerial duties under Prabowo’s leadership.
