Profile of Natalius Pigai, candidate for Prabowo’s cabinet minister


Jakarta (ANTARA) – Natalius Pigai was one of the people invited to meet Prabowo Subianto at his residence located on Jalan Kertanegara No.4, South Jakarta on Monday (14/10).

The meeting was also attended by various political figures and other ministerial candidates. Prabowo summoned several figures to fill strategic positions in his cabinet.

However, when asked about the position he might hold, Natalius, who is a human rights activist, chose not to reveal it.

Coming from Central Papua, Natalius Pigai is a figure who is known to be critical in fighting for Human Rights (HAM) in Indonesia.

Natalius served as a member of Komnas HAM in the 2012-2017 period, where he actively voiced important issues related to the rights of the Papuan people. Born and raised in the Paniai area, Central Papua, Natalius has two brothers named Yulius Pigai and Hengky Pigai.

Natalius studied at the Village Community Government College in Yogyakarta, where he succeeded in obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Government (SIP).

Apart from formal education, he also enriched his knowledge through various non-formal education.

In 2003, he studied statistics at the University of Indonesia, then continued his research education at the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) in 2005 and completed leadership education at the State Administration Institute for the period 2010 to 2011.

Natalius began his professional career as special staff to the Minister of Manpower and Transmigration (Ir Alhilal Hamdi and Yacob Nuwa Wea) from 1999 to 2004.

During this period he was trusted to moderate interactive dialogue on TVRI which discussed political and government issues from 2006 to 2008.

He has also served as Consultant for Deputy Supervision of BRR Aceh-Nias and on the assistance team at the Directorate General of Regional Autonomy, Ministry of Home Affairs under Prof. Dr. Djohermansyah Johan from 2010 to 2012.

As a son of Papua, Natalius Pigai is also known to be very active in various non-governmental organizations, including the Sejati Foundation which focuses on the rights of marginalized groups in Papua, Dayak, Sasak and Aceh between 1999 and 2002.

He was also research staff at Graha Budaya Indonesia-Japan (1998-2001) and staff at the Cindelaras Foundation which is committed to developing local wisdom and fighting for farmers’ rights.
