Requirements to become a candidate for President of the Republic of Indonesia

The election of the President of Indonesia is an important political event regulated in the country’s constitution. Presidential candidates must fulfill various requirements contained in Law Number 7 of 2017 concerning General Elections (UU Election).
Article 169 Election Law no. 7 of 2017 regulates the requirements for running for President and Vice President. A presidential candidate must fulfill several conditions, including:
Terms and conditions for Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates
- Have faith in God Almighty.
- Indonesian citizen since birth and has never accepted another citizenship of his own free will.
- The husband or wife of a presidential candidate and the husband or wife of a vice presidential candidate are Indonesian citizens.
- Never betrayed the country and never committed corruption or other serious crimes.
- Spiritually and physically able to carry out duties and obligations as President and Vice President and free from narcotics abuse.
- Residing in the territory of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia.
- Has reported his assets to the agency authorized to examine state administrators’ wealth reports.
- Not currently having individual and/or legal entity debt obligations which are his or her responsibility which are detrimental to state finances.
- Not being declared bankrupt based on a court decision.
- Never committed any disgraceful act.
- Not being nominated as a member of the DPR, DPD or DPRD.
- Registered as a voter.
- Have a taxpayer identification number and have carried out the obligation to pay taxes for the last 5 (five) years as proven by an annual individual taxpayer income tax notification letter.
- Have never served as President or Vice President for 2 (two) terms in the same office.
- Loyal to Pancasila, the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia, the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia and Bhinneka Tunggal Ika.
- Never been sentenced to prison based on a court decision that has permanent legal force for committing a criminal offense that is punishable by imprisonment for 5 (five) years or more.
- Minimum age of 40 (forty) years. (Adjusting to Constitutional Court Decision No. 90/PUU-XXI/2023).
- Minimum education completed high school, madrasah aliyah, vocational high school, vocational madrasah aliyah, or other equivalent school.
- Not a former member of the banned Indonesian Communist Party organization, including its mass organizations, or not someone directly involved in the 30 September Movement/Indonesian Communist Party.
- Has a vision, mission and program in implementing the government of the Republic of Indonesia.
Furthermore, to nominate themselves as President and Vice President, candidates must be proposed by political parties and fulfill the provisions stipulated in Articles 221 and 222 of the Election Law, as well as Article 6 paragraphs (1) and (2) of KPU Regulation Number 19 of 2023 concerning Nominations. Participants in the General Election for President and Vice President.
- Candidates for President and Vice President are proposed in 1 (one) pair by the Election Contesting Political Parties or the Association of Election Contesting Political Parties.
- Political Parties Contending in the Election and/or Associations of Political Parties Contending in the Election that can nominate Candidate Pairs must meet the following requirements:
- Obtain seats of at least 20 percent of the total DPR seats in the previous DPR member election.
- Obtain valid votes of at least 25 percent of the number of valid votes nationally in the previous DPR election.
