History of Indonesian Parliament Day
Indonesian Parliament Day is celebrated every October 16. This day refers to the day of the legislative institutions, namely the People’s Representative Council (DPR) and the Regional Representative Council (DPD). In carrying out various legislative activities, including meetings, discussion of laws, and election of leaders.
The formation of the legislative institution in Indonesia began with the awareness of Mohammad Hatta (first Vice President) and Sutan Sjahir (first Prime Minister) of the importance of a body that could represent the aspirations of the people, when Indonesia was newly independent.
From these thoughts, the Central Indonesian National Committee (KNIP) was born on 29 August 1945. With political considerations to gain recognition as a democratic country that had a complete government structure, Hatta issued Vice Presidential Decree Number X on 16 October 1945.
Based on this announcement, the Central Indonesian National Commission (KNIP) was designated as a legislative institution. In this proclamation, it was stipulated that the KNIP’s duties changed from merely being an assistant to the president to being equal to the president in terms of drafting laws and establishing the Outlines of State Policy.
With the issuance of this proclamation, it is considered the beginning of the establishment of parliament in Indonesia, which is the basis for commemorating Indonesian Parliament Day every October 16. It is hoped that the commemoration of Indonesian Parliament Day can be a moment of reflection for legislative members to improve and enhance their performance as representatives of the people.
